Bureaucracy

In the fifty years I’ve known Spain it has moved from a poor but beautiful country run by a dictator to a modern and sophisticated democracy. This has been fuelled in the main by two factors – tourism and selling property to foreigners, although the latter ground to a stop in 2008 which is the principal cause of a dreadful and very sad 25%+ unemployment statistic.

In the 1950’s virtually all manufactured goods were imported. Now Spain’s factories produce just about everything. They have a marvellous network of great and uncluttered motorways. Shops are modern. I could go on and on as to how Spain has changed.

But one thing they have struggled to achieve is the removal of bureaucracy which is endemic and would be laughable if it wasn’t so serious and so frustrating.

The Spaniards are an educated and humorous race and can laugh at themselves and this video is an example of this. The worry is that this situation really exists!
