A review of ‘The Shanghai Circle’ by a member of the Online Book Club on the 3rd of March 2024
5 out of 5 stars
Tony Henderson’s work, “The Shanghai Circle,” delves into Shanghai, a multifaceted Chinese city driven by commerce and tourism, blending many cultures, social strata, and foreign inspirations. Shanghai is perceived as a seedy, corrupt city where prostitutes, bars, nightclubs, hotels, and drug trafficking are all controlled by organized crime organizations and gangsters. Rich leaders are preparing their offspring for careers as leaders in this environment, while impoverished laborers face starvation and despair. However, the quiet is broken when a Japanese attack strikes the city, causing widespread fear and the outbreak of hostilities. Many are, therefore, compelled to flee to nearby cities in an effort to find refuge and survival.
One of the novel’s strengths is its examination of Shanghai’s historical context. Readers are given a comprehensive understanding of the city’s issues during this chaotic period thanks to Henderson’s deft integration of actual events into the narrative. It is evident that a meticulous study was conducted to shed light on how the characters’ lives were impacted by political unrest, crime, and war. The book features masterful character development with a range of personalities that gives the plot more nuance and complexity. The main rivalry between Charles Guest and Cheung Pak-ho passed down to their heirs, Joseph and Davina, is compelling and heartbreaking. An additional level of intrigue is added by examining gender norms in traditional Chinese society, especially in light of Davina’s efforts to break down barriers in the male-dominated business sector.
There was nothing to dislike in this book; it was a compelling read. I thoroughly enjoyed reading it. The editing was excellent; upon close inspection, I couldn’t find any errors. Therefore, I’ll rate it 5 out of 5 stars. I suggest it, in particular, to history lovers, as it skillfully blends historical details with a captivating plot to create an exceptional reading experience.
