5 out of 5 stars

“The Shanghai Circle” by Tony Henderson is a mesmerizing journey through the tumultuous landscape of 1936 Shanghai, expertly blending historical accuracy with riveting fiction. This novel, the first in the Chinese Circles series, is a masterpiece that captivates from the first page to the last.

Henderson skillfully weaves a complex narrative, introducing readers to a diverse cast of characters whose lives become intricately entwined against the backdrop of impending war and political upheaval. Davina, the feisty young woman steering her family through the storm of invasion, communism, and natural disasters, is a compelling protagonist. Her resilience and determination make her a character worth rooting for.

One of the novel’s strengths lies in its portrayal of Shanghai as a character itself—a flawed but fascinating city on the brink of downfall. The vivid descriptions and meticulous attention to historical detail immerse readers in pre-war Shanghai’s vibrant and chaotic atmosphere. The author effortlessly transports us to a time when the city was a melting pot of cultures, ideologies, and conflicting interests.

The character of Joseph, heir to the Sung Society, adds a layer of depth to the story, delving into the world of the triads with a nuanced and authentic portrayal. His vendetta adds a compelling element of suspense, keeping readers on the edge of their seats. Meanwhile, Irina, the stunning and stateless Russian girl, adds a touch of romance and vulnerability to the narrative. There is nothing to dislike about the book, and it is well-edited. I rate this book 5 out of 5 stars!

“The Shanghai Circle” is not just a historical novel; it’s a gripping tale of survival, revenge, and the unbreakable human spirit. Henderson’s writing is rich, evocative, and perfectly paced. The plot twists and turns, keeping readers guessing until the very end. This book is a must-read for anyone who appreciates a well-crafted historical fiction novel with characters that linger in your thoughts long after the last page is turned. Tony Henderson has masterfully set the stage for what promises to be an unforgettable series.
